In this book, the Neo-Platonic philosopher George Gemistos Plethon (1356-1452 AD) is symbolized by the “Double-Headed Eagle”, as being an exponent of Byzantium’s ecumenical dimension between East and West, while the Swedish scholar Johannes Bureus (1568-1652 AD) corresponds to the symbol of the “Lion of the North” during the “Era of Great Power” of his homeland. The book begins with the author’s Preface and Introduction, followed by the contents divided into three main parts. The first part describes and analyzes the contributions and long-term influences of Plethon’s life and work on the Renaissance scholars. The “Ancient Theology” (Prisca Theologia), which the philosopher of Mystras introduced in the West during his visit to Italy for the Council of Ferrara / Florence (1437-1439 AD), was not only a source of inspiration for the Renaissance thinkers, but probably the most important axis of their work. In the second part, the works of Bureus are thoroughly researched, as they largely reflect the Hellenocentric and Plethonean spirit of the Renaissance. The ideology of “Gothicism” and the study of the runic stone inscriptions led Bureus to a successful attempt to strengthen his compatriots, notably through the education of the Emperor Gustav II Adolf (1594-1632 AD). In the third part, by comparing more specific and general concepts that characterize the way in which the two World-historical men thought and acted, the similarities and differences in their spirituality are highlighted. The book closes with a Summary in English, a thirteen-page Bibliography and 34 full-color images with detailed captions.

ΠΕΡΙΓΡΑΦΗ ΟΠΙΣΘΟΦΥΛΛΟΥ

Στο παρόν σύγγραμμα ο νεοπλατωνικός φιλόσοφος Γεώργιος Γεμιστός Πλήθων (1356-1452) συμβολίζεται από τον «Δικέφαλο Αετό», έκφραση της οικουμενικής διάστασης του Βυζαντίου ανάμεσα σε Ανατολή και Δύση, ενώ ο Σουηδός λόγιος Γιοχάννες Μπουρέους (Johannes Bureus, 1568-1652) αντιστοιχεί στο «Λέοντα του Βορρά» κατά την «Εποχή της Μεγάλης Δύναμης» της πατρίδας του. Στο πρώτο μέρος του βιβλίου, περιγράφονται και αναλύονται οι συμβολές και οι μακροπρόθεσμες επιδράσεις που άσκησαν η ζωή και το έργο του Πλήθωνα στους Αναγεννησιακούς διανοητές. Η «αρχαία θεολογία» (Prisca Theologia) που εισήγαγε ο φιλόσοφος του Μυστρά στη Δύση κατά την επίσκεψή του στην Ιταλία για τη Σύνοδο της Φερράρας / Φλωρεντίας (1437-1439) αποτέλεσε όχι μόνο πηγή έμπνευσης για τους σκεπτόμενους ανθρώπους της Αναγέννησης, αλλά και πιθανώς τον σημαντικότερο άξονα των έργων τους. Στο δεύτερο μέρος, ερευνώνται διεξοδικά τα έργα του Μπουρέους, καθώς αυτά σε μεγάλο βαθμό απηχούν το ελληνοκεντρικό και πληθωνικό πνεύμα της Αναγέννησης. Η ιδεολογία του «Γοτθισμού» και οι σπουδές των ρουνικών επιγραφών σε λίθους οδήγησαν τον Μπουρέους σε μια επιτυχημένη προσπάθεια ενδυνάμωσης των συμπατριωτών του, ιδιαίτερα μέσω της διαπαιδαγώγησης του αυτοκράτορα Γουσταύου Β’ Αδόλφου (Gustav II Adolf, 1594-1632). Στο τρίτο μέρος, μέσα από την αντιπαραβολή ειδικότερων και γενικότερων εννοιών, που χαρακτηρίζουν τον τρόπο σκέψης και δράσης των δύο κοσμοϊστορικών ανδρών, επισημαίνονται οι ομοιότητες και οι διαφορές στην πνευματικότητά τους. Το βιβλίο κλείνει με μια Περίληψη στην αγγλική γλώσσα, τη Βιβλιογραφία δεκατριών σελίδων και 34 έγχρωμες εικόνες με αναλυτικές λεζάντες.
