The Myth of Hermes Trismegistus. Hermeticism in the Renaissance
By Katelis Viglas
Abstract
The “Hermetic texts” were written in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, and resurfaced in the Renaissance. However, in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the perception prevailed that their author was an Egyptian priest, called Hermes Trismegistus, who lived before the Classical Antiquity, sometimes identified with the Egyptian god Thoth. The correct chronology, achieved in 1614, nothing changed in the circles of Renaissance scholars dealing with hermetic issues. These texts focus on the magical experience of ascent and descent of the soul through the “golden chain” of three worlds: the Earthly, the Celestial and the Intelligible. They believed that in this way they could perfect the occult sciences and they would control the cosmic powers for the benefit of man.
